MAJOR LEAGUE GAMING EXPANDS INTO CANADA
Operated by Insight Sports, MLG Canada's Leadership Includes Top Canadian Executives from Traditional Major Sports Leagues
NEW YORK CITY – JUNE 19, 2007 – Major League Gaming (MLG), the first professional video game league, today announced its expansion into Canada. Operated under license by Toronto–based Insight Sports, one of Canada's top sports media and entertainment companies, the launch of MLG Canada continues MLG's evolution as a major North American sports league.
Since its inception, MLG has modeled its growth on traditional professional leagues and MLG's partners in Canada include some of Canada's most prominent sports executives. Larry Tanenbaum, one of the principle shareholders of Insight Sports, serves as a governor of both the NBA and the NHL and is Chairman of the Board of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd., the owner of the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs, the NBA's Toronto Raptors, and the Air Canada Centre. Insight is led by CEO Kevin Albrecht, who previously helped manage the careers of superstar athletes such as Wayne Gretzky, Mike Weir, and Kurt Browning as head of IMG Canada, and was named by the Globe and Mail as one of the three most influential people in Canadian sports.
Said Albrecht, "From the beginning, MLG has worked within the gamer community to build authenticity and credibility, then take it mainstream to capture a broad audience. Based on our longtime involvement in sports media and entertainment, we know what it takes to make a major pro league work, and we're excited to work with them as part of the fast–growing MLG phenomenon."
"As a leading organization in traditional sports and sports television, Insight's leadership of MLG Canada comes as a tremendous affirmation for MLG as both a new sports league and a business," said MLG's CEO Matthew Bromberg. "We're out to create the next major mainstream North American–style sports league, so we couldn't ask for a more perfect partner than Insight Sports."
The MLG Canadian Open will be held Friday, November 2 – Sunday, November 4, 2007 at Toronto's Direct Energy Centre. This event will serve as the showcase for Canada's Gaming and Digital Lifestyle show, and will cater to over 25,000 core gamers and technology enthusiasts.
